The ducks are diving. Species Saturday invites you to meet the lesser scaup. The lesser scaup is a medium-bodied diving duck, meaning they feed by diving under the surface of deep water to find their food. Males have a dark emerald to black head and a mostly gray to white body. Females are mostly brown on their body and have a dark brown head with a white patch at the base of the bill. This short video shows two male lesser scaup diving under water at our USGS Eastern Ecological Science Center.

Thank you everyone for your support in donating $1,100 to help us recuperate the cost to care for a Lesser Scaup that was recently released after being in care at Wild ARC. We wanted to share a fun fact about the Lesser Scaup. Lesser Scaups are a medium-sized diving duck that are relatively common in this area. These 'seabirds' tend to prefer freshwater, whereas the very similar Greater Scaups are more often found in saltwater. Baby Lesser Scaups can dive underwater the day they hatch, but are s

Patient 24-7002 is a Lesser Scaup that was found on the beach unable to stand. Lesser Scaup's migrate south for the winter and we commonly see them very tired due to their long migration. Lesser Scaup's can go as far south as Central America! After 10 days of care, lots of rest and no signs of injury, this Lesser Scaup was on its way back to the wild. In the video you can see one of our tubs in our CCU, these are used for wading bird patients. #FloridaWildlifeHospital #migration #lesserscaup #mi

Release for a Greater Scaup! A Greater Scaup, a species of diving duck, was found stranded on an icy roadway that he mistook for a body of water. Treatment of these birds involves both checking for injuries and evaluating the waterproofing of their feathers. An examination concluded that, thankfully, this bird hadn't sustained any injuries. He was provided with supportive care, including rehydration fluids, nutritious food, and a bathing pool to enjoy during his short stay at TWC. Once he was re
