It felt good to be back in the studio today and using this technique to make pieces using soft clay. I love the freedom of working in this way and the spontaneity it brings. Retaining the soft quality of the clay in the finished piece is what I want to achieve with these. It felt quite liberating and connecting. I was working on 6 different pieces, this is one of them which isn’t finished yet. I’ll let them dry a little overnight and carry on tomorrow. I’m planning to get this work finished for

The truth is that I do a lot of standing, looking, visualising and rehearsing before making marks on the surface of one of my pots. These are just the actions once I’ve made a decision. I like working on a group of 4 or 5 pieces at once, it means that one piece can be put to dry a little while I work on another. I can hold my design intentions for about 5 pieces in my mind at once but if I have too many pieces on the go at once I get overwhelmed and have to put some pieces to one side. Cornwall

I spend time looking at each piece individually to decide if it’s finished or needs some additional colour or marks and a re-fire. Working into the surface and re-firing is one of the benefits of working with engobe and underglaze.
