The Trump administration’s federal hiring freeze has stopped the onboarding of thousands of seasonal federal firefighters as the next fire season approaches.

A federal judge on Thursday said he stood ready to enforce an order he issued blocking U.S. President Donald Trump's administration from freezing federal grants, loans and other financial assistance after Democratic-led states said billions of dollars in funding was still being tied up.

Some groups said their funding was still blocked, even after the freeze had been rescinded. Others saw their money reinstated but worried about future cuts.

A new coalition of nonprofits came together overnight to challenge a seemingly sweeping order from the Trump administration last week pausing trillions of dollars in federal funding

Courts have blocked the order, but some nonprofits have still had to furlough workers and put projects on hold.

Executive Councilor Karen Liot Hill said a new memo from the U.S. Department of Transportation indicates that it will direct more funding to states with higher birth and marriage rates.
