WASHINGTON – House Speaker Mike Johnson was reelected Wednesday by Republican members of the U.S. House to keep its top leadership positions in the hands of the two Louisiana lawmakers.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) was chosen by House Republicans Wednesday afternoon to be the Republican nominee for speaker in January, according to a post by the House Republican Conference on X.

In January, Mike Johnson faces another vote to stay in the job that places him second in line for the presidency after Vice President-elect JD Vance.

While Johnson has no serious challenger, he faces dissent within his ranks, particularly from hard-right conservatives and the Freedom Caucus withholding their votes as leverage to extract promises ahead.
