With a job title like CEO of Ram Trucks, you’d imagine Tim Kuniskis was born with a love of the American pickup. During a recent Detroit Auto Show interview with Road & Track, however, the executive confirmed he actually doesn’t have what we would call a lifelong passion for the vehicular workhorses.

The new boss of Ram says he “desperately” wants a smaller pickup truck to help the brand better compete with rivals, including Toyota and Ford. For years, speculation has swirled about Ram entering the mid-size pickup market in the US and while small Ram trucks are present in overseas markets, America has so far missed out.

The returning CEO of Ram is still keen on a global mid-sized dual-cab ute to slot in beneath the Ram 1500 pickup.

The 'Ram' moniker used to represent certain models within the Dodge stable, but in 2010, Ram Trucks was founded as a spin-off brand on its own. Now a division of Stellantis, Ram produces a range of light to heavy-duty pickup trucks and commercial vehicles,

"We’re a truck brand and we don’t have a compact, we don’t have a mid-size," boss Tim Kuniskis said. "Kinda disingenuous to call me a truck brand, isn’t it?"
