A 51-year-old man died Monday after his pickup struck a guardrail and then a culvert on a dead-end road in McPherson County. The man was identified as Sam Dial of Newton, Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show.

The trooper pursued and a passenger in the vehicle emerged from the passenger side and fired several shots at the trooper. Shell casings were recovered.
