Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry has completed his defensive coordinator search with the addition of Sam Siefkes. Siefkes has had stops in the football world from Division III, to his latest position as the linebackers coach with the Arizona Cardinals — for the past two seasons.

Monday’s trumpeting of Siefkes included testimonials from Pry, Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon, Minnesota Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell and former Vikings coach Mike Zimmer. In short, this was not

Siefkes had come to Arizona after two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. He replaces the fired Chris Marve at Virginia Tech.

Siefkes’ hiring came less than seven weeks after Pry made the first major shakeups on his coaching staff. He fired defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Chris Marve, offensive line coach Ron Crook and strength and conditioning coordinator Dwight Galt IV after the program’s second straight 6-6 regular season.

Virginia Tech on Monday hired Cardinals linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to be the Hokies' defensive coordinator, the school announced, and Arizona coach Jonathan Gannon lauded the move, saying Siefkes "has unbelievable knowledge on how to stop offenses.

Sam Siefkes also is a former Wofford and Wisconsin-Platteville defensive coordinator, and he worked as a quality control coach for the Minnesota Vikings.
