Tuskegee University is hiring eight police officers for round-the-clock patrols of the campus following the early Sunday morning mass shooting that resulted in one death and injuries to 16 others, the university’s president announced Thursday.

La’Tavion Johnson was a young man who lived for his family and friends. Only 18 years old, he was already set to begin a career next week with the Alabama Department of Transportation. That dream was stopped short in Sunday’s early morning hours when gunfire rang out at Tuskegee University amid the homecoming festivities.

Macon County 911 had received a call at about 12:58 a.m. indicating a shooter was firing a weapon on the Tuskegee University campus, and Ashley responded. In the parking lot, the document states Ashley saw a Black man lying on the ground and determined he was dead.
