The U.K. government on Friday announced plans to dismantle the remains of London’s Grenfell Tower, almost eight years after the deadliest fire in Britain since World War II swept through the high-rise apartment building,

The British government said Friday the Grenfell Tower, where 72 people died in a west London 2017 fire, will be taken down. A 6-year investigation found it was avoidable and caused by incompetence, dishonesty and greed.

Survivors and bereaved families’ groups said Britain’s deputy prime minister had told them that the site of the 2017 catastrophe would be dismantled.
