The two leaders will meet in Peru, where China has steadily expanded its influence in a challenge to the United States in its own region.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan called competition with China a top concern as President Biden hands the reins to President-elect Trump. He said the meeting takes place during a “critical moment between the US and China” and will “ensure that we don’t run into any problems in the next two months in this transition of power.”

President Joe Biden will meet for a final time this week with Chinese President Xi Jinping as he prepares to hand over power — and the reins of the world’s most consequential bilateral relationship — to president-elect Trump in January.
