For years, the Mississippi River was a roadblock for travelers – either to be forded or boated across. But, on Jan. 23, 1855, the first bridge across the river opened.

They are remnants of the city’s 1855 suspension bridge — the first permanent span across the Mississippi River anywhere along its length. Today, the area is part of First Bridge Park.
