The North and South Taurids occur every year in September, October, and November. They may have originated from a comet that broke up about 10,000 years ago.

While the Southern Taurids already hit their peak last week, the Northern Taurids, active Oct. 13-Dec. 2 will be at their best Monday and Tuesday.

Two sister meteor showers are already flashing across night skies — and will peak a week apart. The Southern Taurids will reach their zenith early Tuesday morning. and the Northern Taurids the following week.

The Northern and Southern Taurid meteor showers grace the skies each year for more than two months and both branches will peak at different times in November. They aren't known for creating displays as spectacular as the Perseids or the Orionids, but they have the chance to be rich in fireballs, according to the American Meteorologic Society.

Stargazers who missed the peak of the Southern Taurid meteor shower this year still have an exciting opportunity to witness the Northern Taurid meteor shower, which is set to reach its peak this week.
