Parts of northern Nassau County could get around 3 inches of snow with 2 inches around Islip and less than one inch in Montauk.

A winter storm is expected to bring three to five inches of snow to Long Island from Sunday into Monday, when many people will be off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

By early Sunday afternoon, snow will develop with breezy winds through the rest of the day and night. Long Island is expected to receive 2 to 5 inches of snow, and possibly more, on Sunday, with an arctic air mass arriving next week, the National Weather Service said. A two-day precipitation period is forecast to begin with rain Saturday afternoon, when high temperatures will climb to the upper 40s, the weather service predicts.

Most of the tri-state was scheduled to be under a winter storm warning by the afternoon, when conditions pick up and heavy snow bands could drop as much as an inch of snow per hour. For some, it’ll be the most snow in nearly three years.
