The 86-year-old Daim served as finance minister from 1984 to 1991 and from 1999 to 2001 under former premier Mahathir Mohamad. His lawyer, Gurdial Singh Nijar, confirmed Daim's passing to Reuters, and said the funeral would be held on Wednesday.

Malaysia’s former Finance Minister Daim Zainuddin passed away on Wednesday morning at a local hospital, according to his lawyer.

Daim Zainuddin replaced Anwar Ibrahim as finance minister in 1998 after the latter was sacked following a fallout with Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
