HI, Our family is coming to your area In May and we plan to spend a day in the Dales. Is there a book we can read beforehand to learn about the small Swaledale villages? My ancestors lived in many of the villages and we would love to learn about them before we leave. We will be visiting the museum.

The best source is, as you have noted, the wonderful museum in Reeth, but I will add one suggestion (even though I am not sure of the availability). It is called "Fourum's Dales Collection: Characters, Legends and Traditions of Swaledale and Beyond" by K Allen Miller with Bob Hattersley. It is a book of songs by a group called Fourum which tells the stories of "Swaledale and the Northern Dales" with a brief descciption of the history behind each song. It's even better if you can get one of their CDs to go with it. The address in the inside cover is FOURUM MUSIC, 43 Danesmoor Crescent, Darlington, Co Durham.
