I'm planning to see a concert at the Howard Theatre in November, and I'll be walking to the Shaw-Howard metro stop by myself after the show. I don't know anything about the area, but several people have expressed concern that a young woman shouldn't be walking alone there after dark. It looks like the walk from the theater to the metro is only a block and a half, but since I don't know the city very well I figure I How safe is the area? Is it well lit/are there people out and about after dark on a Friday night?

I have only been to the theater once and my parking was across the street. I was with my brother and felt safe as there were many people leaving at the same time. There was also a restaurant next door and people were seated outside. Not sure if this will be the case in November. If possible I would suggest having someone with you as DC is a major city and it will be late. You can never be too careful! Maybe you can get an Uber car or taxi if you do have to be alone. Whatever you end up doing please be aware of your surroundings and be safe!
